We’ll observe their growth\, learn to identify different species by key traits\, be mesmerized by the display of colors\, shapes\, textures\, and discuss these remarkable organisms’ ecological roles\, culinary delights\, and even a touch of folklore. \nBe prepared for two miles of leisurely walking and chatting over moderate and possibly muddy terrain. Please be aware this is not a foray; collection is permitted for this activity through a yearly CA State Parks Scientific Research and Collecting permit. Fungi information is for educational purposes only. Foraging is illegal in CA State Parks. \nYou must purchase a ticket through this page to attend. Tickets are $10 for general audiences\, $5 for students\, youth (12-17 years old; children under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)\, Sugarloaf members\, Sugarloaf volunteers\, and free for children under 12. Meet outside the Visitor Center ten minutes prior to the event start time. \nWear layers and appropriate footwear for muddy/slippery trails\, bring at least a quart of water\, and if you have them\, mushroom identifying guides. DESCRIPTION:The Marcus Shelby Orchestra will perform the magical “Harlem Nutcracker Suite” by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn\, which is a masterpiece musical re-arrangement and orchestration of the well-known “Nutcracker” by classical composer Peter Tchaikovsky. Marcus Shelby and his orchestra performed the “Harlem Nutcracker Suite” for the first time\, last year in Healdsburg and for the past decade at SFJAZZ. The music is wonderful and exciting for audiences of all ages\, who will recognize many of the enduring themes from the original “Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky\, using the blues and swing as the vehicle for the music. There are nine sections that explore the range and tonal diversity of the big band orchestra. Although specifically written for the holiday season\, the music has the energy\, power\, and joyfulness that could allow the suite to be played anytime of the year. \nThe second half of this special holiday concert features celebrated Bay Area vocalist Tiffany Austin with the Marcus Shelby Orchestra\, performing a program of Christmas songs\, spirituals\, and various traditional songs re-arranged from around the world. This portion of the concert includes poetry\, a slide show\, and other holiday surprises. \nOur annual Healdsburg Jazz Holiday Concert also includes a toy drive\, so bring a small gift\, or book\, or toy that we will deliver to our local partners. \nSaturday\, December 20th\, at 7PM.\nAdmission (including fees): $29 to $104.
