SUMMARY:STRIPPED FOR PARTS: American journalism on the brink: Film screening and panel discussion with local journalists
DESCRIPTION:Ner Shalom Tzedek committee presents: (https://www.nershalom.org/event-calendar/2026/1/11-stripped-for-parts)\nSTRIPPED FOR PARTS: AMERICAN JOURNALISM ON THE BRINK\nThis 90-minute documentary film : The story of one secretive hedge fund that is\nplundering America’s newspapers and the journalists who are fighting back.\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion with local journalists \nDATE: Sunday\, January 11\, 2026\nTIME: 1:30 pm – 4:30pm\nPLACE: Ner Shalom Synagogue 85 La Plaza\, Cotati\, CA 94931 \nCongregation Ner Shalom is a warm and inclusive Jewish community drawing from Reconstructionist and Jewish Renewal roots. \n$10 Suggested Donation \nFILM SYNOPSIS:\nStripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink is the award winning story of one secretive hedge fund that is plundering America’s newspapers and the journalists who are fighting back. Investigative reporter Julie Reynolds\, Denver Post editorialist Chuck Plunkett and a handful of others\, backed by the News Guild Union\, go toe-to-toe with the faceless Alden Global Capital in a battle to save and rebuild local journalism across America. Who will control the future of America’s news ecosystem: Wall Street billionaires concerned only with profit\, or those who see journalism as an essential public service and the lifeblood of our democracy? \nDIRECTOR’S BIO\nRICK GOLDSMITH has been producing and directing documentary films since 1981. His mission as a filmmaker is to tell stories that encourage social engagement and active participation in community life and the democratic process\, and to stimulate young minds to question the world around them.\nStripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink (2023) is the third in a trilogy of films with journalism themes\, following two Academy Award nominees for Best Documentary Feature: Tell the Truth and Run: George Seldes and the American Press (1996) and The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers (2009). Both films were broadcast nationwide on PBS\, and Most Dangerous Man received the prestigious Peabody Award. In 2023\, Goldsmith received a Maysles Bros. Lifetime Achievement Award from the St. Louis International Film Festival\, The Rose F. and Charles L. Klotzer First Amendment Award for Free Speech in the Service of Democracy from the Gateway Journalism Review and\, in 2024\, a Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) award for Documentary Film. \nDIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:\nAs a documentary filmmaker\, journalism and newspapers\, as subject matter\, have been my “beat.” The recent collapse of the newspaper industry\, resulting in “ghost newspapers” and “news deserts” and the shrinking of local journalism throughout the country\, has caused me to mourn the loss–but also on the lookout for the next great journalism story to tell. When I came across this story\, of journalists standing up for their own profession\, their communities\, and for our democracy\, I instinctively knew I had it. \nStripped for Parts Official Website: StrippedForPartsFilm.com \nPANEL MEMBERS following the screening:\nCarl Molesworth: Carl worked as a journalist for newspapers and magazines throughout Washington state for nearly 40 years and is the author of 17 non-fiction books about the history of air combat during World War II. \nLaura Hagar Rush: She started her career at the East Bay Express in Berkeley\, California and became the editor of The Yodeler\, the Sierra Club newspaper for the Bay Area. After moving with her husband and two young children to Sonoma County in the early 2000s\, she became managing editor of North Bay biz magazine and\, later\, editor of Sonoma West Times & News. When Sonoma West Times & News closed down after its sale Laura and Dale Dougherty opened the Sebastopol Times\, which was founded in 1889. \nTroy Niday:\nTroy has over 25 years of executive leadership experience from working for the lead local news sources in Omaha\, Phoenix\, Oklahoma City\, Birmingham\, and here in Sonoma County. He spent the past 11 years serving as the COO of Sonoma Media Investments publisher of The Press Democrat until new ownership eliminated his and several other leadership positions. Additionally\, Troy is the Immediate Past President of the International News Media Association’s North America board of directors.\nTroy is pursuing the establishment of a nonprofit newsroom in Sonoma County to increase the impact of quality local journalism and hold governments and the powerful to account.

SUMMARY:Manzanitas! Hike at Sugarloaf Park
DESCRIPTION:Native plants are the best bird feeders! If California had a state shrub\, Manzanita (“Little Apple”) would be an excellent choice. Join Sugarloaf docent\, Dana Glei\, in a 2-mile hike along the Meadow-Hillside loop (250 ft elevation change) where we will see Manzanitas growing in the wild\, talk about their recovery after heavy losses during the 2017 and 2020 fires that collectively burned 99% of the park\, and discuss some of the many birds and other critters that use Manzanitas for food\, shelter\, and nesting sites. \nWe will also highlight the benefits of including it in your own landscape and explain what it needs to be grown successfully (don’t put it on drip!). If we’re lucky\, the hummingbirds will be taking advantage of the nectar on the Manzanita flowers. At the end of the hike\, Dana will offer tastings of Manzanita *juice* made from fruit grown in her own yard and produced following a method like that used by indigenous peoples. The fruit has no juice; in fact it has the texture of sawdust. The juice is more like tea that draws out the flavor and sweetness from the berry-like fruits. \nMeet at the White Barn. Tickets are $10 for general audiences\, $5 for youth (12-17 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian)\, students\, Sugarloaf members\, Sugarloaf volunteers\, RFO volunteers\, and free for children under 12 years old. Wear appropriate footwear for dirt trails with gravel (and perhaps some mud) and layers of clothing. Bring at least one quart of water\, a snack (if you’d like)\, and hiking poles (if you use them). If you use iNaturalist or would like to learn how to use it\, make sure it’s already installed on your phone before you arrive for the hike. Heavy rains reschedule to Sunday\, January 18. Parking fees apply.

When her father is unjustly imprisoned\, Alouette’s efforts to save him lead to her own confinement in the notorious Salpêtrière asylum\, where thousands of women are held captive and cruelly treated. But within its grim walls\, she discovers a small group of brave allies\, and the possibility of a life bigger than she ever imagined.\n1939: Kristof Larson is a medical student beginning his psychiatric residency in Paris\, whose neighbors on the Rue de Gobelins are a Jewish family who have fled Poland. When Nazi forces descend on the city\, Kristof becomes their only hope for survival\, even as his work as a doctor is jeopardized.\nA spellbinding and transportive look at a side of Paris known to very few—the underground city that is a mirror reflection of the glories above—Paula McLain’s unforgettable new novel chronicles two parallel journeys of defiance and rescue that connect in ways both surprising and deeply moving. \nAuthor: Paula McLain is the New York Times bestselling author of six novels\, including The Paris Wife\, Circling the Sun\, and Love and Ruin\, as well as two collections of poetry and a memoir. Her work has been published in over thirty-five countries\, and featured in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, Town & Country\, Real Simple\, and elsewhere. \nAbout Paris Every Day:\nWhether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor\, enjoy the magical view of Paris in this book from Everyday Parisian blogger\, Rebecca Plotnick.\nParis Every Day reveals the City of Light through Rebecca’s photography and offers you the insider knowledge to help cultivate a French frame of mind.\nParis is more than a destination\, it’s a lifestyle. Chocolate or espresso\, flower market or Mus e d’Orsay\, a small park or a favorite rooftop–you’ll find ideas for scouting these and more with photographs that reflect Rebecca’s decades-long love affair with the city.\nParis Every Day is a sublime sortie that explores jazz bars\, picnic spots\, and casual bistros. Find advice for each season\, including how to dress like a Parisian and indulge in the freshest regional produce. All bolstered by fabulous photos that include landmarks like the Luxembourg Gardens and the Eiffel Tower as well as prime places to people watch.\nIt’s not just about the sights; it’s how to best enjoy them. Whether you’re planning a trip or just want an escape\, you will turn to this book again and again for Rebecca’s well-curated wisdom on relishing everyday moments in the City of Light. \nAuthor: Rebecca Plotnick is American and the founder of Every Day Parisian blog. In 2013\, she decided to pack up all her belongings and left Chicago for what would become a nomadic way of living for two years between the United States and France. Everyday Parisian was founded in 2016 as a result of this desire to meld the French lifestyle with American surroundings and to create a community with a shared love for Paris. It aims to highlight the fun and new ways to “frenchify” daily life\, offers travel recommendations\, shares fashion inspiration\, and much more.Rebecca’s photographic work has been featured by Pottery Barn for the past decade and has recently been acquired by Ikea.
