SUMMARY:New Monsoon at HopMonk Sebastopol
DESCRIPTION:New Monsoon is a staple of the San Francisco Bay Area Jam/Rock Band scene. With an eclectic blend of world inspired rhythms\, collaborative songwriting\, deep grooves and extensive jams New Monsoon incorporates many influences into their own brand of rock ‘n roll. Celebrating over 25 years of making music\, New Monsoon is better than ever having cultivated the experiences of national touring\, performing at top venues and festivals including Red Rocks\, Bonnaroo\, and Austin City Limits Fest. The band has an extensive catalog of studio recordings most notably “The Sound” produced by Michael Shrieve (Santana)/Paul Kimble (Grant Lee Buffalo) and “V” produced by platinum award winning producer John Cutler (Grateful Dead). \n  \nNew Monsoon’s exhilarating blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation shines in an irresistible blend of sophisticated song craft\, inventive musical exploration and down home rock-n-roll. They have a collective power that comes off as a real unified force on stage. It’s not just a band\, you know? It’s something transcendental.” – Michael Shrieve (original drummer\, Santana)

SUMMARY:The New Mastersounds - Ta-Ta For Now Tour
DESCRIPTION:THE NEW MASTERSOUNDS \nwith THE WESTONES \nSimon Allen DRUMS | Pete Shand BASS | Eddie Roberts GUITAR | Joe Tatton ORGAN & PIANO \nThe New Mastersounds have been delighting audiences with their infectious brand of funky soul-jazz since they formed in Leeds\, England in 1999. For the first five years of the band’s career they were regulars at the Jazz Café in London\, before they began to turn heads on the funk scene in the US\, where \nguitarist/producer/bandleader Eddie Roberts now lives. For over a decade they have been a staple act of the late-night scene during New Orleans’ annual Jazz Fest. Always happy to hit the studio between tours\, this veteran band now boasts a rich recorded catalogue that includes fifteen original studio albums\, four live albums\, several compilations\, and a remix album. \nThough they have collaborated over the years with such musical luminaries as Maceo Parker\, Fred Wesley\, Corinne Bailey Rae\, Art Neville\, Bernard Purdie and Lou Donaldson\, they are at their best on stage as a tightly-packed quartet – bass\, drums\, guitar and keyboards – firing off scorching grooves and feeding on the energy of the dancers in the front row.

SUMMARY:Park Rx—Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard about “Shinrinyoku” or “forest bathing”? Here is an opportunity to take a walk and experience the practice for yourself. Learn techniques to maximize the health benefits and stress reducing qualities of this walking practice. Shinrin-yoku originated in Japan and is gaining popularity in the United States for its documented health benefits. This practice takes a walk in the woods to another level. A centering and calming restorative practice\, it promotes balance and restored vitality through a quality of presence and heightened sensory awareness. SUMMARY:Julian Brave Noisecat at SRJC
DESCRIPTION:Copperfield’s Books and Santa Rosa Junior College proudly welcome Oakland writer and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat to Santa Rosa for his powerful debut – We Survived the Night.\nThe discussion will include a reading and the author will share a cultural dance inspired by moments from the book!\nAudience Q&A and book signing to follow.\nThis is a free event\, registration encouraged for headcount but not required to attend.\nA stunning narrative from one of the most powerful young writers at work today—We Survived the Night interweaves oral history with hard-hitting journalism and a deeply personal father-son journey into a searing portrait of Indigenous survival\, love\, and resurgence.\nJulian Brave NoiseCat’s childhood was rich with culture and contradictions. When his Secwépemc and St’at’imc father\, an artist haunted by a turbulent past\, abandoned the family\, he and his non-Native mother were embraced by the urban Native community in Oakland\, California\, as well as by family on the Canim Lake Indian Reserve in British Columbia. In his father’s absence\, NoiseCat immersed himself in Native history and culture to understand the man he seldom saw—his past\, his story\, where he came from—and\, by extension\, himself.\nYears later\, NoiseCat sets out across the continent to correct the erasure\, invisibility\, and misconceptions surrounding the First Peoples of this land\, as he develops his voice as a storyteller and artist in his own right. Told in the style of a “Coyote Story\,” a legend about the trickster forefather of NoiseCat’s people who was revered for his wit and mocked for his tendency to self-destruct\, We Survived the Night brings a traditional artform nearly annihilated by colonization back to life on the page. Through a dazzling blend of history and mythology\, memoir and reportage\, NoiseCat unravels old stories and braids together new ones. He grapples with the erasure of North America’s First Peoples and the trauma that cascades across generations\, while illuminating the vital Indigenous cultural\, environmental\, and political movements reshaping the future. He chronicles the historic ascent of the first Native American cabinet secretary in the United States and the first Indigenous sovereign of Canada; probes the colonial origins and limits of racial ideology and Indian identity through the story of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina; and hauls the golden eggs of an imperiled fish out of the sea alongside the Tlingit of Sitka\, Alaska. This is a rewriting and restoration—of Native history and\, more intimately\, of family and self\, as NoiseCat seeks to reclaim a culture effaced by colonization and reconcile with a father who left. Virtuosic\, compelling\, and deeply moving\, this is at once an intensely personal journey and a searing portrait of Indigenous survival\, love\, and resurgence.\nDrawing from five years of on-the-ground reporting\, We Survived the Night paints a profound and unforgettable portrait of contemporary Indigenous life\, alongside an intimate and deeply powerful reckoning between a father and a son. Soulful\, formally daring\, indelible work from an important new voice.\n“Written in gorgeous\, sparse prose\, We Survived the Night reads like a novel. Told with a blistering honesty\, the truth and grit create a beautifully woven coyote story we haven’t heard before. This is a love letter to Oakland\, to the Canim Lake Band Tsq’secen of the Secwepemc Nation\, to a father from his son\, to the act of being a Native person in the twenty first century finding ways to love even through all that wounds have opened and wrought. With this\, Julian Brave NoiseCat has written a book I’ve been waiting my whole life to read.” —Tommy Orange\, author of Wandering Stars\nAuthor: JULIAN BRAVE NOISECAT is a writer\, Oscar-nominated filmmaker\, champion powwow dancer\, and student of Salish art and history. His writing has appeared in dozens of publications\, including The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and The New Yorker. NoiseCat has been recognized with numerous awards including the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism Prize and many National Native Media Awards. He was a finalist for the Livingston Award and multiple Canadian National Magazine Awards\, and was named to the TIME100 Next list in 2021. His first documentary\, Sugarcane\, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. Directed alongside Emily Kassie\, Sugarcane premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival\, where NoiseCat and Kassie won the Directing Award in U.S. Documentary. NoiseCat is a proud member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq̓éscen̓ and descendant of the Líl̓wat Nation of Mount Currie. We Survived the Night is his first book.
