SUMMARY:Park Rx—Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard about “Shinrinyoku” or “forest bathing”? Here is an opportunity to take a walk and experience the practice for yourself. Learn techniques to maximize the health benefits and stress reducing qualities of this walking practice. Shinrin-yoku originated in Japan and is gaining popularity in the United States for its documented health benefits. This practice takes a walk in the woods to another level. A centering and calming restorative practice\, it promotes balance and restored vitality through a quality of presence and heightened sensory awareness. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park hosts a Forest Therapy Series as part of its Park Rx Program the 4th Sunday of the month (March through November) led by certified Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) practitioners. \nWe invite you to join us on this therapeutic experience of sights\, sounds\, scents\, touch\, and memory. The outing begins at the White Barn and meanders less than one mile from the start point in a reverie of introspection and connection to the natural world. \nTickets are $20 or free with an August 2025 or newer Park Rx from a Sonoma County Medical Provider. To sign up with a Park Rx\, please email the signed Rx form to alma@sonomaecologycenter.org. Please have your Rx available at the time of signup\, as the number of Park Rx tickets is limited and you will be asked to turn in a copy at the time of registration. Wear layers\, comfortable footwear\, bring water\, sun protection\, and if desired\, a snack or a picnic to enjoy after the event. Parking fees apply. Heavy rains cancel.

SUMMARY:Julian Brave Noisecat at SRJC
DESCRIPTION:Copperfield’s Books and Santa Rosa Junior College proudly welcome Oakland writer and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat to Santa Rosa for his powerful debut – We Survived the Night.\nThe discussion will include a reading and the author will share a cultural dance inspired by moments from the book!\nAudience Q&A and book signing to follow.\nThis is a free event\, registration encouraged for headcount but not required to attend.\nA stunning narrative from one of the most powerful young writers at work today—We Survived the Night interweaves oral history with hard-hitting journalism and a deeply personal father-son journey into a searing portrait of Indigenous survival\, love\, and resurgence.\nJulian Brave NoiseCat’s childhood was rich with culture and contradictions. When his Secwépemc and St’at’imc father\, an artist haunted by a turbulent past\, abandoned the family\, he and his non-Native mother were embraced by the urban Native community in Oakland\, California\, as well as by family on the Canim Lake Indian Reserve in British Columbia. In his father’s absence\, NoiseCat immersed himself in Native history and culture to understand the man he seldom saw—his past\, his story\, where he came from—and\, by extension\, himself.\nYears later\, NoiseCat sets out across the continent to correct the erasure\, invisibility\, and misconceptions surrounding the First Peoples of this land\, as he develops his voice as a storyteller and artist in his own right. Told in the style of a “Coyote Story\,” a legend about the trickster forefather of NoiseCat’s people who was revered for his wit and mocked for his tendency to self-destruct\, We Survived the Night brings a traditional artform nearly annihilated by colonization back to life on the page. Through a dazzling blend of history and mythology\, memoir and reportage\, NoiseCat unravels old stories and braids together new ones. He grapples with the erasure of North America’s First Peoples and the trauma that cascades across generations\, while illuminating the vital Indigenous cultural\, environmental\, and political movements reshaping the future. He chronicles the historic ascent of the first Native American cabinet secretary in the United States and the first Indigenous sovereign of Canada; probes the colonial origins and limits of racial ideology and Indian identity through the story of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina; and hauls the golden eggs of an imperiled fish out of the sea alongside the Tlingit of Sitka\, Alaska. This is a rewriting and restoration—of Native history and\, more intimately\, of family and self\, as NoiseCat seeks to reclaim a culture effaced by colonization and reconcile with a father who left. Virtuosic\, compelling\, and deeply moving\, this is at once an intensely personal journey and a searing portrait of Indigenous survival\, love\, and resurgence.\nDrawing from five years of on-the-ground reporting\, We Survived the Night paints a profound and unforgettable portrait of contemporary Indigenous life\, alongside an intimate and deeply powerful reckoning between a father and a son. Soulful\, formally daring\, indelible work from an important new voice.\n“Written in gorgeous\, sparse prose\, We Survived the Night reads like a novel. Told with a blistering honesty\, the truth and grit create a beautifully woven coyote story we haven’t heard before. This is a love letter to Oakland\, to the Canim Lake Band Tsq’secen of the Secwepemc Nation\, to a father from his son\, to the act of being a Native person in the twenty first century finding ways to love even through all that wounds have opened and wrought. With this\, Julian Brave NoiseCat has written a book I’ve been waiting my whole life to read.” —Tommy Orange\, author of Wandering Stars\nAuthor: JULIAN BRAVE NOISECAT is a writer\, Oscar-nominated filmmaker\, champion powwow dancer\, and student of Salish art and history. His writing has appeared in dozens of publications\, including The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and The New Yorker. NoiseCat has been recognized with numerous awards including the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism Prize and many National Native Media Awards. He was a finalist for the Livingston Award and multiple Canadian National Magazine Awards\, and was named to the TIME100 Next list in 2021. His first documentary\, Sugarcane\, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. Directed alongside Emily Kassie\, Sugarcane premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival\, where NoiseCat and Kassie won the Directing Award in U.S. Documentary. NoiseCat is a proud member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq̓éscen̓ and descendant of the Líl̓wat Nation of Mount Currie. We Survived the Night is his first book.

SUMMARY:The Blender Band at Murphy's
DESCRIPTION:The BLENDER is a concept put together by drummer Michael Israel to bring together different groupings of the many musicians he has been playing with since arriving in the Bay area in the early 90’s. The music can take on a variety of forms depending both on the instrumentation and the limitless desires of the various instrumentalists involved. No two shows are identical\, and variety and eclecticism are the very ingredients to keep audiences asking for more. The idea is to have fun and never be stagnant or doing things by rote. Apparently\, this formula is working because the BLENDER is gaining in popularity & demand rapidly!\nBlender Musician Show Mix: Michael Israel\, Michael Blakeman\, Terry Sanders\, Tommy Miller\, and Craig Caffall.

SUMMARY:SR Laws at The Penngrove Pub
DESCRIPTION:One of our favorite singer sonngwriters in the northbay\, returns to our bar stage \, music kicks off at 6pm and it’s FREE! \n  \nS.R. Laws: An inspiring Storyteller in Song \n  \nS.R. Laws is a performing and recording original musical artist whose work resonates with a familiar warmth while introducing entirely fresh ideas. Hailed by guitarist/promoter Scotty O’Neill as “an ORIGINAL songwriter who knows how to tell a story clearly in song\,” Laws has built a reputation for songs that capture both nostalgia and innovation. \n  \nEarly Influences and Musical Roots \n  \nGrowing up in Northern California\, Laws developed a deep bond with music at an early age. His father worked as a trash collector\, and young Scott Ray Laws (a.k.a. S.R. Laws) spent countless hours digging through discarded 45-rpm records. Each discovery—whether caked in grime or found pristine—felt like unearthing treasure. The thrill of dropping the needle on something new ignited his lifelong passion for song-craft. \n  \nThe Texas Pilgrimage \n  \nWith only two suitcases and $500 to his name\, Laws set out for Austin\, Texas—the “Live Music Capital of the World.” There\, open‐mic nights and songwriter showcases became his classroom. Night after night\, he honed his craft\, forging connections and absorbing the essence of Americana\, roots rock\, and modern folk. \n  \n“It was such a treat catching your set last night—really refreshing to hear something new and original. Thanks for pulling up a chair and hanging out with us—we really enjoyed the conversation and the stories behind your songs.” – Tripp B.\, Singer-Songwriter \n  \nInfluences That Shaped His Voice \n  \nLaws draws inspiration from master storytellers who paved the way for heartfelt\, lyrical music. Artists who have left an indelible mark on his craft include: \n  \n– John Hiatt \n  \n– Lucinda Williams \n  \n– Rodney Crowell \n  \n– Neil Finn \n  \n– Patty Griffin \n  \n– Steve Earle \n  \n– Ron Sexsmith \n  \nTheir mastery of narrative and melody has shaped his own artistic journey\, resulting in songs that feel both comfortingly familiar and entirely “out there.”
