SUMMARY:The Miró and Isidore String Quartets Mendelssohn’s Octet at 200: A Legacy in Sound
DESCRIPTION:Two string quartets sharing the stage is always a party\, which is why the Miró and Isidore Quartets are so excited to collaborate for this program celebrating the bicentenary of Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat major\, Op. 20\, a masterpiece that has captivated audiences and musicians alike since its premiere in late 1825. \nOur repertoire for this program spans the history of chamber music\, opening with the “Sunrise” quartet by Joseph Haydn – in many ways the inventor of the string quartet – before showcasing a contemporary American work written for the Miró by Pulitzer Prize winning Composer Caroline Shaw\, “Microfictions vol 1”. \nAnd following this wide-ranging first half\, we conclude with Mendelssohn’s Octet\, completed by the 16-year-old composer on 15 October 1825. This glorious creation reflects the spirit of the early Romantic era while also drawing inspiration from classical masters including Haydn. Mendelssohn‘s intricate textures and delicate atmospheres continue to inspire musicians today such as Caroline. \nIsidore String Quartet\nWinners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant\, and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022\, the New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit\, rediscover\, and reinvigorate the repertory. \nMiró Quartet\nThe Miró Quartet is one of America’s most celebrated string quartets\, praised as “furiously committed” by The New Yorker and recognized for its “exceptional tonal focus and interpretive intensity” by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.” \nThe Miró and Isidore String Quartets program

DESCRIPTION:One of the most famous choirs in the world\, the Vienna Boys Choir has been enchanting audiences for centuries with their pure and pristine sound and charming performance style. These gifted musicians with voices of unforgettable beauty are a beloved institution\, presenting a diverse array of vocal music that appeals to audiences of all ages. \nTo commemorate Johann Strauss’ 200th birthday the Vienna Boys Choir revisit their popular program and Deutsche Grammophon recording\, Strauss For Ever. Waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family are a specialty of the illustrious Vienna Boys Choir. The Boys enjoy singing Strauss because the music is upbeat\, rhythmic\, and fast. The lyrics tell stories of sailors\, ghosts\, bandits\, and even hamsters—not to be taken too seriously\, but to be heard and cherished For Ever.

SUMMARY:Kurbasy "Songs of the Ukrainian Forest"
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating music project from Lviv\, Ukraine\, Kurbasy’s folk-based multimedia performances vibrate in tight vocal harmonies\, resonant lyrics\, distinctive instrumentation\, and dreamlike visual imagery. These cultural diplomats explore Ukraine’s rich trove of folk songs\, lullabies\, and legends to conjure contemporary connections to bygone times \nAffirmation in a time of violence and resistance: Kurbasy channels contemporary connections to an archaic past with its time bending Songs of the Ukrainian Forest. \nThe 14-song cycle draws on the repertoires of the Eastern\, Central and Western Regions of Ukraine. The language varies according to the origin of the songs\, for example those of the border regions with Poland are in Lemsky dialect\, a mixture of Ukrainian and Polish. The lyrics tell stories of boys and girls\, stories of love\, joy\, but also of war. “We want to affirm our loud and clear freedom\, our love for our country and for our people\,” said Maria. “We want to show our independence and strength\,” Natalia adds.
