DESCRIPTION:Kc Turner Presents: Dragon Smoke\, Ft. Ivan Neville\, Eric Lindell\, Stanton Moore & Robert Mercurio\n+ TRACORUM\n+ A special performance from Brass Queens from 2:30pm-3:45pm in the Abbey! \nABOUT: \nDragon Smoke formed in 2003 as a “Superjam” – part of the New Orleans Jazz Fest tradition of putting together a band of musician who don’t normally play together and just see what happens. With the dual vocals of Neville and Lindell\, matched with the Galactic rhythm section\, the band quickly realized\, “We are on to something!”. The band has played during every Jazz Fest since its inception. This inception took place at the tiny smokey Dragon’s Den Bar\, hence the name – Dragon Smoke. \nThe music centers around Lindell’s blue-eyed soul\, Neville’s funk and R&B and Galactic’s groove. Besides annual trips to the West Coast the past 15 years\, and a 2013 trip to the East Coast\, this band has been strickly playing around New Orleans\, LA. With everyone in the band being a leader in their own\, it is a rarity to get this band together. And when it does\, it shows that these guys are really having FUN! From the interplay and communication between the members\, you would think that Dragon Smoke has been touring continually for years. \nDragon Smoke is looking towards the future\, with plans to write and record and to do more touring outside of New Orleans. So be on the lookout for the Smoke—IF YOU SEE THE ‘SMOKE\, YOU KNOW YOU WILL SEE FIRE!

SUMMARY:Y La Bamba at HopMonk Sebastopol
DESCRIPTION:To declare one thematic narrative from Lucha\, Y La Bamba’s seventh album\, would be to chisel away a story within a story within a story into the illusion of something singular. \n“Lucha is a symbol of how hard it is for me to tackle healing\, live life\, and be present\,” Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos\, lead vocalist and producer of Y La Bamba\, says of the title behind the album which translates from Spanish to English as ‘fight’ and is also a nickname for Luz\, which means light. The album explores multiplicity—love\, queerness\, Mexican American and Chicanx identity\, family\, intimacy\, yearning\, loneliness—and chronicles a period of struggle and growth for Mendoza Ramos as a person and artist. \nLucha was born out of isolation at the advent of COVID-19 lockdowns\, beginning with a cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry\,” and following Mendoza Ramos as she moved from Portland\, Oregon to Mexico City\, returning to her parents’ home country while revisiting a lineage marred by violence and silence\, and simultaneously reaching towards deeper relationships with loved ones and herself. The album reflects “another tier of facing vulnerability\,” as Mendoza Ramos explains\, and is a battle cry to fight in order to be seen and to be accepted\, if not celebrated\, in every form—anger and compassion\, externally and internally\, individually and societally. As much as la lucha is about inner work\, fighting is borne from survival stemming from social structures designed to uplift dominant groups at the hands of suffering amongst the marginalized.

After four major label releases\, she started her own independent label\, Bad Dog Records in 1999\, and has since released ten more albums – including the companion CD to her critically acclaimed\, one woman\, Off-Broadway musical\, My Mother Has Four Noses. \nJonatha has co-written and/or produced songs with Katy Perry\, The Courtyard Hounds\, and Jessica Simpson. She’s also written for four Disney films\, numerous television shows\, and she composed and performed the theme song for Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse.
