SUMMARY:Summit Saturday at Sugarloaf Park
DESCRIPTION:If you can hike 10 miles with at least 3\,000 ft of ascent\, this hike may be right for you. This very challenging hike will be like climbing Bald Mountain TWICE! \nFrom the main parking lot\, we will head out on Pony Gate trail\, cross into the upper Canyon trailhead down to the waterfall\, and climb back up Pony Gate to Stern Rd and Bald Mountain Trail where we will continue to the summit of Bald Mountain for a fantastic 360° view. From the summit\, we will continue on Gray Pine Trail in search of a less windy location for a lunch break. Then\, we will take Brushy Peaks Trail to the lookout and continue along Brushy Peaks to Hillside Trail to Creekside Trail\, ending at the main lot. \nThis event is free (donations are encouraged) but requires RSVP. Wear appropriate footwear for rocky or slippery trails and multiple layers (it will be cold when we start; you’ll get warmed up as we climb\, but it will be very windy on top of Bald Mountain). Bring your lunch\, at least two quarts of water\, and hiking poles if you use them. Heavy rains reschedule to Saturday\, January 31. Parking fees apply.

SUMMARY:Manzanitas! Hike at Sugarloaf Park
DESCRIPTION:Native plants are the best bird feeders! If California had a state shrub\, Manzanita (“Little Apple”) would be an excellent choice. Join Sugarloaf docent\, Dana Glei\, in a 2-mile hike along the Meadow-Hillside loop (250 ft elevation change) where we will see Manzanitas growing in the wild\, talk about their recovery after heavy losses during the 2017 and 2020 fires that collectively burned 99% of the park\, and discuss some of the many birds and other critters that use Manzanitas for food\, shelter\, and nesting sites. \nWe will also highlight the benefits of including it in your own landscape and explain what it needs to be grown successfully (don’t put it on drip!). If we’re lucky\, the hummingbirds will be taking advantage of the nectar on the Manzanita flowers. At the end of the hike\, Dana will offer tastings of Manzanita *juice* made from fruit grown in her own yard and produced following a method like that used by indigenous peoples. The fruit has no juice; in fact it has the texture of sawdust. The juice is more like tea that draws out the flavor and sweetness from the berry-like fruits. \nMeet at the White Barn. Tickets are $10 for general audiences\, $5 for youth (12-17 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian)\, students\, Sugarloaf members\, Sugarloaf volunteers\, RFO volunteers\, and free for children under 12 years old. Wear appropriate footwear for dirt trails with gravel (and perhaps some mud) and layers of clothing. Bring at least one quart of water\, a snack (if you’d like)\, and hiking poles (if you use them). If you use iNaturalist or would like to learn how to use it\, make sure it’s already installed on your phone before you arrive for the hike. Heavy rains reschedule to Sunday\, January 18. Parking fees apply.

SUMMARY:Park Rx—Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard about “Shinrinyoku” or “forest bathing”? Here is an opportunity to take a walk and experience the practice for yourself. Learn techniques to maximize the health benefits and stress reducing qualities of this walking practice. Shinrin-yoku originated in Japan and is gaining popularity in the United States for its documented health benefits. This practice takes a walk in the woods to another level. A centering and calming restorative practice\, it promotes balance and restored vitality through a quality of presence and heightened sensory awareness. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park hosts a Forest Therapy Series as part of its Park Rx Program the 4th Sunday of the month (March through November) led by certified Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) practitioners. \nWe invite you to join us on this therapeutic experience of sights\, sounds\, scents\, touch\, and memory. The outing begins at the White Barn and meanders less than one mile from the start point in a reverie of introspection and connection to the natural world. \nTickets are $20 or free with an August 2025 or newer Park Rx from a Sonoma County Medical Provider. To sign up with a Park Rx\, please email the signed Rx form to alma@sonomaecologycenter.org. Please have your Rx available at the time of signup\, as the number of Park Rx tickets is limited and you will be asked to turn in a copy at the time of registration. Wear layers\, comfortable footwear\, bring water\, sun protection\, and if desired\, a snack or a picnic to enjoy after the event. Parking fees apply. Heavy rains cancel.
